The most common side effects reported by patients for all dermal filler procedures are temporary bruising and swelling at the treatment site. Patients may reduce the amount of bruising and swelling by limiting their alcohol consumption (having none the night before), discontinuing the use of vitamin E, Aspirin®, herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wart, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen (Motrin, Nuprin or Advil) and Naproxen (Aleve) 1 – 2 weeks prior to treatment. If you need to take a pain medication, acetaminophen (Tylenol), or acetaminophen-containing products (Lortab, Vicodin, etc.) will not increase bruising.
Patients should avoid strenuous exercise the day of treatment, as this increases the heart rate and quickens blood-flow, thus increasing the risk of bruising. In some instances these treatments may cause cold sores, so a patient with a history of cold sores should ask their medical practitioner for a prescription at the time of the procedure.
Some medical practitioners recommend that patients take Arnica Montana, a homeopathic substance, one or two days before treatment to help reduce bruising. Ask your medical practitioner.
If you know you are going to have a treatment, then there is no need to wear makeup. For some procedures, you will be asked to remove makeup before the procedure.
If you have a sunburn or an infection, it is better to let the skin heal before you receive a treatment.
Prepare yourself mentally for the treatment. Get plenty of rest the night before a procedure, and allow yourself plenty of time at the doctor’s office. Although all procedures are very short – usually 15 – 30 minutes – it is best to eliminate stress by not feeling rushed and hurried.
Always consult with your medical practitioner before any medical procedures. Only then can you determine if any procedure is right for you. As with all medical procedures, consult with your medical practitioner if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
